Hello Africa, Goodbye Baggage

December 24, 2005

We are now happily in Tanzania, but sadly our backpacks are not. When we arrived in South Africa our were no where to be found. At the moment the airlines don’t know where they are, hopefully they’ll be found by the time we come down from Kilimanjaro.

In last 48 hours we have been in 4 countries (Bolivia, Argentina, South Africa and Tanzania) while overnighting in South Africa waiting for our connection to Tanzania, we covered 50 miles and visited 3 outdoors and sporting good stores, 3 pharmacies and 2 South African doctors offices in a mostly successful effort to replace the vital contents of our packs.

The biggest loss was hiking boots that were already broken in. Assuming our FedEx box with the other half of our gear (shipped 3 day delivery — 15 days ago) makes it today and I have every reason to believe it will, we should be OK.

A big thank you to all the strangers in South Africa that were sympathetic and helpful in our difficult time, but especially to Shaun Moodley of Sportsman’s Warehouse who personally drove us 25 miles (and then walked us through the mall to the store) so we could arrive at a competitor’s place before they closed for the last remaining items.
