Movie night

August 20, 2007

Asiemut DVD cover Last night my friends Gary, Lida and Dima came over to show us some movies they brought back from the Rhode Island Film Festival (where their film Happily Ever After won first place in the experimental category).

One of the movies they brought was Asiemut, a film by and about a Canadian couple riding their bikes 8,000 Kilometers from Mongolia to India. It was a great job for a first film and I enjoyed it enormously. It brought back many memories from our own trip and made me want to travel again. It also made me want to make a film. If you get a chance to see it an upcoming film festival, try and make it. Or you can buy their DVD online.

Shop like Paris Hilton, even if you don’t have a trust fund.

Shop like Paris HiltonWhich, as it turns out, really means shop, just like Paris Hilton… It seems Barron Hilton, Paris’ rich grandfather, has had enough of having Paris dragging his family name through the mud. Her recent drunk driving was the tipping point and it has cost Paris a $60 million inheritance. Adding insult to injury her show, The Simple Life was canceled. Even so, she still has more money for clothes shopping than anybody else I know. I don’t think she worries too much about prices, but maybe it is because she saves money by not buying underwear. I have a different strategy, coupons!

I have been spending lots of time on Deal Locker which has a great list Deal Locker, a web site dedicated to the notion that friends help friends get deals. It’s sort of like Nicole Ritchie calling Paris about the Buy One Get One free sale at Versace, but for those of us that don’t spend $7000 on a one of a kind couture dresses (or get calls from Nicole Ritchie).

As a shopper you basically just go to Deal Locker and type in the store you are looking for, or click on a category to browse around and see what deals they have. If you use Firefox, definitely get the coupon bookmarklet, you drag link to your button bar and then when you visit any page, you just click the button and it will show you coupons for that page.

To help your friends, when you get a coupon in your email or wherever, you can stick it in the Deal Locker. The more people that do it, the better it works. The site seems to be off to a great start with tons of coupon codes for baby items, clothing, pets, shoes, toys, technology items and tons more.

If you really want to shop like Paris check out the coupons for
famousfashionsfound.com
a site which tracks what famous people wear (at least when they get their picture taken). If that is not your speed, there are hundreds of clothing stores with coupons to pick from, including Victoria Secret, Fredrick’s of Hollywood, even Jockey if you do wear underwear.
